Dr. Bret Wiechmann

By Bret Wiechmann, MD, FSIR, FAHA, FSVM

AMP 2024 Course Director

What I look forward to every year is the interaction with experts in the field from all disciplines who help manage these patients. We all learn from each other.

When patients experiencing critical limb ischemia (CLI) come in for treatment, they expect the highest level of attention and care.

The prospect of losing a limb is sobering, and it is imperative that all clinicians involved in CLI patients’ care not only stay up to date on research-based best practices but also work together as a team to provide the best possible treatment.

The 2024 Amputation Prevention Symposium (AMP), to be held August 14-17 in Chicago, will share the latest advances in revascularization and explore groundbreaking techniques that will improve the future for CLI patients. Our focus, “Setting the ExAMPle: Together We Stand Against CLI,” stresses the team approach to combatting this disease.

AMP has always been an outstanding example of true collaboration. The educational content on critical limb ischemia and its treatment has always been on the leading edge.

I am honored to be one of the course directors for such an amazing educational event. To me, the real value and what I look forward to every year is the interaction with experts in the field from all disciplines who help manage these patients. We all learn from each other.

My presentations at AMP will include:

  • “The Elephant in the Room: How Has the Last Year Impacted CLI Patients,” from 9:42 – 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14;
  • “Beyond Intervention: What Needs to be Done ‘After the High-Five,’” from 4-4:10 p.m. on Thursday, August 15; and
  • “OEIS National Registry Update: An Update on CLI Patients & Complications,” from 5:21 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 15.

Additionally, we know that the financial side of healthcare is a significant concern for patients. Along with the clinical approaches, AMP also includes sessions on cost, payment, and reimbursement guidance — all of which are critical for patients’ successful treatment plans and improving outcomes.

The AMP program is strengthened through endorsements and partnerships with the CLI Global Society, Outpatient Endovascular and Interventional Society (OEIS), Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), and Society for Vascular Medicine (SVM); as well as industry-supported sessions and a robust exhibit hall.

Presented by 65 expert faculty, AMP’s unequaled educational program includes new approaches and techniques for treating CLI through live case broadcasts and practical education, featuring hands-on workshops for real-world application.
