Ongoing education is key in this fight, and we are proud to partner with medical professionals nationwide and provide the training required by the MATE Act.

For more than two decades, the opioid and addiction crisis has ravaged American communities, leaving more than 1 million people dead of overdoses.

What makes this issue so difficult to combat is how it has evolved over time and continues to evolve — beginning with prescription drug misuse, an influx of illicit heroin, followed by an explosion of synthetic fentanyl and today, the most recent iteration, opioids adulterated with xylazine. Each phase of this crisis presented unique challenges with prevention, treatment, and recovery.

One way the federal government is working toward prevention is through education. The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act passed by Congress as part of the Omnibus Bill of 2022 and was signed into law in 2023, mandating that all DEA-registered practitioners be required to complete a one-time, 8-hour training program on opioid or other substance use disorders to renew their licenses.

Prescribers and patients mutually benefit from more education on addiction. Through the MATE Act requirements, healthcare providers can better protect their patients from debilitating and life-threatening addictions.

Thousands of healthcare providers have met their MATE Act training requirements through HMP Global, earning CMEs through courses led by world-renowned experts. Options for this training include:

  • MATE Act Training (virtual)
